Dr Michelle Ledger graduated from the University of Pretoria, Onderstepoort in 2001. She has a strong interest in sporting animals and welfare and is currently completing a Masters in International Animal Welfare, Ethics and Law via the University of Edinburgh. She comes from a horse racing regulatory background, in both Australia and her native, South Africa, as well as spending time learning about horse racing in both Hong Kong and Japan during specialised study tours. Michelle has previously spent several years working in busy private practice in both small animal and equine race track and sporting horse settings as well as working at welfare shelters and the RSPCA in Victoria. She served a three-year term on the Animal Welfare Advisory Committee for the Minister for Agriculture in Victoria. She has worked as the Chief Veterinary Officer at the NSW Greyhound Welfare and Integrity Commission since May 2018 (in Bathurst, NSW) with a strong focus on injury reporting, improving welfare standards and improving understanding of the contributing factors to greyhound racing injuries and how they can best be mitigated. She has two children, one in pre-school and one in Year 12 and has no spare time for hobbies, she looks forward to being able to travel again when COVID-19 settles.
